UEFA Super Cup: Chelsea player ratings

The European champions were humiliated by the powers of El Tigre and the mighty Atletico Madrid with a beastly scoreline of 4-1. Chelsea were never in it and looked totally out of sorts as they tried to control Radamel Falcao. Three goals in the first half and the 4th one in the second had decided the game and Chelsea got a consolation when Gary Cahill shot the ball past Chelsea loanee, Thibaut Courtouis. Athletico did not dominate the game but when they were on the ball, Chelsea could not handle them. Their defense was solid and attack was creative, whereas Chelsea looked very demotivated. Atletico got everyone back to defend and everyone in front to attack, and it worked very well for them. The attack and defense looked very complacent for Chelsea and it was clearly seen throughout the game.

Chelsea missed their captain dearly. The way John Terry organized the defense got them through many tough games and against Atletico, Luiz and Cahill were very unorganized. The forwards lacked inspiration and Chelsea could not create any clear cut scoring chance other than the lone goal they scored.

Looking towards the future, how big a blow would it be when John retires? He will have to pass on his methods to Gary and David or else the Chelsea defense will face huge problems in the future.

Another factor to Chelsea’s pathetic performance was the absence of a powerful talisman. Like it or not Drogba was missed last night and unless Chelsea change their style of play a bit, Drogba will always be missed.

Nevertheless, history has shown the Europa League winners are more hungry to win the Super Cup as was seen last night.

Now to the ratings !

Petr Cech – 4.5

Could do nothing about the goals, but could have dealt better with the first one.

Branislav Ivanovic – 4

Lacked pace and did not contribute to defense or attack.

Gary Cahill – 5

Displayed a poachers mentality to grab Chelsea’s only goal but was very poor defensively.

David Luiz 3.5

A poor performance from the Brazilian saw Chelsea lose the game. Passing was very sloppy and looked very lazy on the ball.

Ashley Cole – 4.5

Average in defense but was sloppy in passing and did not produce any good crosses.

John Obi Mikel – 6.5

Only player to have played well in Monaco. Tried his best too keep possession and broke down some dangerous attacks.

Frank Lampard – 5

Lacked conviction in whatever he did. Organizing an attack usually falls on his shoulders but could not find a way past a packed Atletico defense.

Eden Hazard – 5

Tried to create but wandered around aimlessly. Not one of his best performance so far.

Juan Mata – 5

Was not involved at all. Looked very demotivated at the end of the game.

Ramires – 5.5

Won quite a few challenges and was caught offside before being substituted.

Fernando Torres – 5.5

Couldn’t do anything even if he wanted too. Scuffed one shot but lacked service.

Substitutes -

Oscar – 5

Tried his best to change things but could not find his way past the Atletico defense. Lacks experience at a bigger stage.

Sturridge – NA
