Spain Player Ratings
David de Gea - 5/10
David de Gea had precious little to do in the first half and often found himself outside his penalty area to thwart Ukraine's counter-attacks. Spain's first-choice goalkeeper was the guilty party in the opposition's opening goal and was caught out of position as Viktor Tsyhankov scored the winner.
Pau Torres - 6.5/10
Pau Torres was reliable alongside Sergio Ramos against Ukraine and was effective against the opposition's counter-attacks. The Villarreal defender continues to grow with the national side and is likely to keep his place in Spain's starting eleven.
Sergio Ramos - 6.5/10
Sergio Ramos marshalled his troops well and drove forward on several occasions as Spain looked for their goal. The Real Madrid captain could have arguably done more to prevent Ukraine's goal but wore his heart on his sleeve and was one of the few visibly passionate members of his side.
Sergio Reguilon - 7/10
Sergio Reguilon was one of Spain's best players against Ukraine and consistently threatened to break the deadlock with his probing runs into the final third. The Tottenham full-back also set Oyarzabal up with an excellent pass in the second half and often found himself in advanced positions on the pitch.
Jesus Navas - 6/10
Jesus Navas showed plenty of initiative going forward and complemented Adama Traore well in the final third. The Sevilla defender was caught out of position for Ukraine's goal, however, and was on the wrong side of Tsyhankov as Spain conceded the lead.
Rodri - 7/10
Rodri was one of Spain's better players against Ukraine and consistently recycled possession to keep his side in the game. The Manchester City midfielder also hit the post in the second half with a powerful shot and gave a good account of himself against Ukraine.
Mikel Merino - 6.5/10
Mikel Merino linked up with Ansu Fati on a few occasions and had a comfortable outing as Spain dominated the midfield. The Real Sociedad midfielder was replaced by Dani Ceballos after the first half as Spain looked for the opening goal.
Sergio Canales - 5.5/10
Sergio Canales did his part in the midfield for Spain but failed to create any chances of note during his time on the pitch. The attacking midfielder took far too many touches on the ball on a few occasions and was taken off in the second half.
Adama Traore - 7.5/10
Adama Traore made a few piercing runs in the first half but was unable to deliver accurate crosses into the penalty area. The Wolves speedster improved in the second half and was Spain's chief threat towards the end of the game.
Ansu Fati - 6/10
Ansu Fati had a disappointing game by his standards and was kept quiet by a brilliant Karavaev in the first half. The Barcelona teenager did get a few shots away and was replaced by Ferran Torres at the hour-mark.
Rodrigo Moreno - 5/10
Rodrigo was picked ahead of Mikel Oyarzabal and Gerard Moreno against Ukraine and did not do his selection any justice. The Spanish forward got a fair few headers on target in the first half but failed to trouble a well-drilled Ukraine defence.
Substitutes
Dani Ceballos - 7/10
Dani Ceballos gave Spain the impetus after the hour-mark and created several chances for his teammates with some exquisite passes. The Arsenal midfielder was also persistent with his pressing against Ukraine and will want more playing time under Luis Enrique.
Ferran Torres - 6.5/10
Ferran Torres gave Spain a cutting edge on the left flank but failed to get the better of the Ukraine goalkeeper when he was through on goal. Torres did not see as much of the ball as he would have liked and needs to work on his accuracy in the final third
Mikel Oyarzabal - 5.5/10
Mikel Oyarzabal replaced Rodrigo Moreno in the second half and did not have much of an impact on the proceedings. The striker had an excellent chance to give Spain the lead after the hour-mark but failed to get his shot away.
Dani Olmo - 6/10
Dani Olmo was brought on in the second half as Spain pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The RB Leipzig forward did show initiative against Ukraine but did not have enough time to express himself on the pitch.
