Following his trial for tax evasion, Uli Hoeness the president of Bayern Munich has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail. The 62-year-old admitted to having evaded €27.2m in taxes, but had asked for leniency from the jury as he had voluntarily disclosed his fraud to the authorities.

Hoeness has been instrumental in making Bayern Munich one of the most successful clubs in the world and had previously won the World Cup with the German national team in 1974. The prosecutors were inclined for the German to serve a five-year sentence, however the court granted leniency.

As Tax evasion is considered a very serious crime in Germany, the case of Bayern Munich president Hoeness has shocked the whole nation and has stirred various German tax dodgers into turning themselves in.

Former Tennis champion Steffi Graf‘s late father Peter Graf was sentenced to three years and nine months in jail, for tax evasion of 12.3 million marks (€6.3m) in 1997 ; however he was released after 25 months only.
