Umbro UX-1 Review

The UX-1’s are truly a beautiful sight

One of the most iconic brands in English football has got to be Umbro. In fact I’d go so far as to calling it the ‘Pride of England’ due to the fact that it graced the jersey of the Three Lions when they triumphed over Germany to win the World Cup in 1966 – their finest hour in football. The legendary English sportswear manufacturer’s boots even graced the feet of some of footballs most legendary players including Denis Law, Roberto Carlos, Alan Shearer and Michael Owen – which indicates just how rich the company’s history is.

And if you thought Umbro couldn’t hold their own against the might of Nike and Adidas then think again because their recent offering – the UX-1 is sure to pack a mean punch. The company are determined to regain ground they lost to Adidas and Nike, and by the looks of things they’re perfectly capable of clawing their way back to the top. Umbro has created a perfect blend of tradition and technology in the UX-1’s making it no pushover in the cut throat world of boot manufacturing.

One of the most striking features of the UX-1’s is its ridiculously beautiful upper which is crafted from a Kevlar like composite material which not only promises excellent touch, durability, and flexibility but also breathability – which is basically all the right aspects of a standout football boot. The upper is also boasts of two layers of rubber – the first which shields the forefoot and helps make your first touch as perfect as possible, while the second layer enhances your strike rate. Unfortunately Umbro hasn’t disclosed the exact materials that the UX-1’s are composed of, but hey who’s complaining as long as we get a perfect boot we’re satisfied.

Umbro’s famous A-Frame makes a return with the UX-1’s and promises to enhance your stability along with keeping your feet secure so that you can make even the most trickiest of moves on the field without flinching. And you though just Nike and Adidas’ boots oozed with technology!

A lot of football boot makers pay a lot of attention to the boot’s front, while often neglecting the back but Umbro, being the perfectionist that they are, haven’t and have fitted the UX-1 with a perfect backbone. The back consists of a dual density cage along with protective spine cushions to shield your Achilles from the perils of the field. This is definitely one of the boot’s most distinctive features, and one that sets it apart from the rest.

Coming to the UX-1’s bottom, Umbro have done a superb job there and are really on par with their competitors. The soleplate consists of ten spaced out studs that work to reduce pressure as well as enhance comfort, which is truly an excellent combo. The heel studs work well to create stability while also supporting speedy movements.

All in all I’d say Umbro have done everything if their power to reaffirm themselves as a formidable force in football in the form of the UX-1’s. As a big fan of Umbro myself (Being a proud owner of a pair over a decade before they released in India), I’d say choose the UX-1’s without a moment’s hesitation if you’re looking for a durable, trustworthy boot that’ll help you make all the right moves on the field.
