Undefeated United salvage a draw

Manchester United Draws

Manchester United Draws

Defeat seemed certain for Manchester United when they went 2-0 down in the second half to Aston Villa at the Villa Park, but a spirited fightback in the dying minutes ensured a draw. Villa looked set for their first home victory against United in 15 years after goals from Ashley Young and Marc Albrighton. Manchester United launched a spectacular comeback to secure a draw and continued their undefeated season. This was United’s sixth draw away from home.

The first half at Villa park witnessed a disappointing performance from the United side which clearly lacked imagination and skill in the absence of Ryan Giggs. United produced only a couple of chances and Dimitar Berbatov should have scored in the 16th minute when he was sent clear by a Javier Hernandez pass. Surprisingly it was the home team that looked more threatening during the end of first half.

Villa began the second half with much purpose and Albrighton should have scored in the 52nd minute but he missed his header from six yards. Villa were now looking more confident and United were rescued by the woodwork twice in the space of two minutes. Wess Brown had a torrid time against the pace of Agbonlahor and Villa’s pressure paid off when Ashley Young converted a penalty in the 72nd minute to give Villa the lead. Sir Alex Ferguson immediately replaced Berbatov and Hernandez with Macheda and Gabriel Obertan respectively. Villa doubled their lead in the 75th minute with a wonderful counter-attacking goal in the 75th minute. United responded with a goal in the 81st minute as Macheda scored a screamer from 18 yards. Nemanja Vidic then scored a header in the 85th minute to restore parity. United seemed destined to score the third given their knack of scoring important goals in the injury time and Obertan was only denied by a spectacular save from Brad Friedel.

Sir Alex Ferguson looked disappointed at the way United played and the fact that United has drawn six of their seven away games is a matter of concern. It is to be seen whether Chelsea increases its lead on Sunday.
