United announce 7-year kit deal with Chevrolet

United will have Chevrolet as their official shirt sponsors from the start of the 2014/15 season, with the car manufacturers taking over after the end of AON’s current deal. The deal comes just a few weeks after the club signed their first deal with the company, becoming the official car sponsor of the club, but soon Chevrolet will also have their name on the front of the United shirt.

United’s Commercial Director spoke positively of the deal, saying “This is a fantastic, long-term deal for the club. We have been partners with Chevrolet for only six weeks, but already they have produced some fantastic ideas that will benefit both the partnership and our 659 million followers around the world.”

General Motors (who own Chevrolet) spokesman Alan Batey said “We are extremely proud to connect our brand with Manchester United and its passionate supporters all around the world. Manchester United’s statistics are impressive, but this relationship goes far beyond the numbers – this relationship is about connecting our brand with the deep-seated emotion that surrounds the team everywhere it goes.”

The deal will mark a slow depreciation of United’s kit sponsors, with Chevrolet coming after AON, AIG and Vodafone. With the announcement being made officially, you imagine that something financially related is going on – it’s likely that Chevrolet are paying United some money up-front to help with the current financial problems.

However, with Chevrolet also signing a sponsorship deal with Liverpool last week, it seems like something odd is certainly going on. With relationships between us at an all-time low, it’s an odd time for us to be signing deals with a company also affiliated with one of our arch-rivals.
