Manchester United recently tied down two pf their young stars to new contracts with Marcu Rashford and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson signing new deals yesterday. Now one of their own have all but confirmed they have tied down one of their most experienced players as well.
Former United man Paddy Crerand spoke to MUTV recently and he stated in his interview that the midfielder has signed a new contract and all that's left is an official announcement. “Something that happened today that nobody has mentioned, and I'm delighted that he has signed another contract: Michael Carrick.”
There was a lot of speculation about the future of the midfielder after the FA Cup final came to its conclusion. The news slipped under the radar because of the Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho saga but now that the Portuguese has been confirmed as the new boss it seems like he wants Carrick to stay
Crerand also revealed the duration of the extension period. “He's signed a contract for another year. There was a situation where it looked as if his contract was up at the end of this year and that was it, but from what I'm gathering he's there for another year.”
Carrick had an ordinary season by his standards. He was constantly rotated by van Gaal with fellow teammates Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin. Carrick did feature more regularly as compared to the other two but was not as influential as he usually is.
There is no doubt the player has immense quality and even at this age, he will be a crucial asset for Jose Mourinho. There were several reports of him being linked with a move to Arsenal but that would have been unlikely considering they have now confirmed the capture of Granit Xhaka.
Mourinho takes a tour of Carrington
Manchester United’s new manager Jose Mourinho took a tour of United’s Carrington training ground along with Sir Bobby Charlton. The legend was known to have certain reservations about his appointment but he has put that behind him and welcomed the manager with open arms.
Charlton congratulated Mourinho on his arrival saying “happy to see you here”. Mourinho and his long-time assistant Rui Faria went around the ground along with Charlton, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and head of elite development John Murtough.
Mourinho was announced as manager last week just a few days after van Gaal got the sack. Despite winning United’s record equalling 12th FA Cup the Dutchman was asked to leave before seeing out his 3-year contract.
