Manchester United managed to win 2-1 against CFR Cluj away from home to collect 3 more vital points through a clinical performance from Wayne Rooney and a couple of good finishes from Robin Van Persie. Here are my ratings for the United players:
1. David De Gea: 8/10
He was great between the posts, pulling of a couple of crucial saves; one of them in injury time to help United stay strong to clinch the clinical victory.
2. Rafael: 7/10
He played well down the right flank in his usual role of attacking more than defending. He pulled off an impressive performance and was easily the best of the back four.
3. Jonny Evans: 5/10
He didn’t have the best of the games. Should have marked better in the box in the build-up to the Cluj goal. Got injured and had to be substituted with 10 mins to play.
4. Rio Ferdinand: 4/10
I’m sorry, but he’s getting a bit old and slow. I mean, he’s a great defender, but he just can’t keep up with the pace of the game any more. He too should have done better in the build-up to the goal.
5. Patrice Evra: 4/10
His bad run of form continued as he had another bad game on the left flank. He should have stopped the cross coming in that led to the goal.
6. Tom Cleverley: 8/10
Played extremely well on his Champions League debut in mid-field with an amazing 93% pass completion rate for his 108 passes. Are we looking at the next Paul Scholes?
7. Anderson: 7/10
Combined well with Cleverly in mid-field and helped retain possession for United for long periods of the match, like he did against Newcastle a couple of weeks ago in the Capital One Cup.
8. Darren Fletcher: 7/10
Had a great game in midfield, playing off passes from Cleverly and Anderson. Dropped deep and did his defensive duties too. Brings strength and depth to the United mid-field.
9. Wayne Rooney: 9/10
Had a brilliant game, providing both the assists and a couple more crucial passes. His return from injury has proved vital as he provides United with energy and the will to win.
10. Hernandez: 7/10
Had a decent game. Played off the shoulder of the last defender and provided a clinical through-ball to Robin Van Persie who couldn’t put it past the keeper.
11. Robin Van Persie: 9/10
Combined brilliantly with Wayne Rooney to score both the goals. He was a bit lucky with the first goal hitting his shoulder and looping over the Cluj keeper, but there was no doubt with the second one as he volleyed home on his favourite left foot.
Johnny Evans was replaced by Scott Wooton on his Champions League debut and Hernandez was replaced by Danny Welbeck.
