In a surprising move, Mark van Bommel asked for the termination of his current contract in Bayern Munich to join AC Milan.
Van Bommel was until Monday, a part of the German club which won the double last season and went all the way to the finals of the Champions League only to go down to Jose Mourinho’s Inter.
With his contract ending at the end of the season, Van Bommel chose Italian giants AC Milan over teams like Liverpool and Wolfsburg who were interested in signing the player whom they saw impress at the World Cup last year for Netherlands.
The statement in Bayern Munich’s official website read: “Captain Mark van Bommel is joining AC Milan effective immediately. The Dutch international asked for his contract to become void to transfer for sporting reasons.”
Van Bommel did not come out and say what the reason was for quitting his role as captain and leaving the club on such short notice. However, he stated that his relationship with the German club was good and there were no tensions in between him and the management.
“I am a proud captain and the club has not laid anything in my way. I am very happy with the way the chairman Mr. Rummenigge has treated me and it deserves respect. I will not talk about my reasons for asking to quit” he said to Sport1 Television during a press conference.
The signing will help AC Milan who are facing a injury crisis in midfield with many players spending their time on the sidelines. Currently, only Massimo Ambrosini, Matthieu Flamini and Alexander Merkel are available and van Bommel will be able to get a place in midfield as soon as he joins the club. He is expected to make his debut against Sampdoria on the 26th of this month.
