As a true testament to his talent and impressive performance over the years, Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea was adulated by his Old Trafford predecessor Edwin van der Sar, following his decision to stay with the club.
This season was epic for the goal-keeper as he not only helped the Red Devils win the Premier League title and earn a place in the PFA Team of the Year but also established himself as United’s number one keeper.
Van Der Sar, who won eight major trophies in six years in Manchester, has expressed that he could not have asked for a better successor to fill his shoes.
“The first half of the season and the year before, there were some mixed feelings and the gaffer changed it up a little bit to play Anders Lindegaard for three or four games,” Van der Sar said to United’s official website.
“But then David came back in and we stuck with him.”
“From that point, his performances grew and he became more important to the team all of the time. It has been a good turn around for him in terms of his performances and his own self-confidence in being the Manchester United goalkeeper.”
De Gea was linked with a potential move to Barcelona, who are sorely lacking a goalie since Victor Valdes left.
But the 22-year-old former Atletico Madrid youngster has made it clear that he wants to continue with United.
