Van der Sar to captain Manchester United against Blackpool

The flying Dutchman

Edwin Van der Sar is set to captain Manchester United on his final league appearance against Blackpool, luckily at home. With the title already in bag, Sir Alex is expected to make changes in the squad but has decided to retain the big goalie since it would be his final appearance at Old Trafford. The manager named 6 of his starting XI in yesterday’s press conference when he said that Van der Sar, Evra, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Anderson and Berbatov will play.

Sir Alex was all praise for the goalie in his press conference:

“He has been fantastic. Absolutely sensational. Edwin’s professionalism and dedication have been fabulous.

“A goalkeeper’s training is completely different from an outfield player. It involves diving about the goalmouth all the time, saving shots and blocks.

“It is hard to imagine a normal person being able to do that when they were over 40. But he is special. He has something inside him.

“Some people have a certain quality that involves them needing to be a winner all the time. That is what Edwin has been. He has had a great career. He has won four titles with us, Wembley will be his fifth European Cup final and he has more caps than anyone else in Holland.

It has been a fantastic career and he is going out at the very top.”

With just the Champions League final against Barcelona left after the Blackpool game, Van der Sar would like to make a winning exit to his 6 year long career at Old Trafford. The Dutchman, who has played for big European clubs like Ajax and Juventus joined United in 2005 from Fulham. Since then, he has never looked back in his career. The penalty shootout against Chelsea in the 2008 Moscow final has been the high point in his 20 year long career and although the fans want him to stay for another year, family needs have forced him to retire at the end of this season itself.

United have already begun to lookout for a new goalkeeper to save themselves from the situation they faced after the retirement of Peter Schmeichel and have been linked with the likes of De Gea, Stekelenburg and Neuer.
