Vasco players speak out about unpaid salaries

Rio de Janeiro – Midfielder Nilton joined a growing chorus of Vasco da Gama footballers to voice their concern about unpaid salaries.

The Brazilian first division team has reportedly not paid its squad for more than two months, raising fears some players could be ready to leave the club, Xinhua reports.

“We know about the financial difficulties but we want the club to resolve the matter quickly,” Nilton said.

“The Brazilian championship has started and we need to play with a clear mind. In the same way we have our commitments, the club has theirs.”

Nilton’s comments came after Dede, Alecsandro and Fernando Prass also publicly voiced their displeasure at the wage delays.

Vasco is still searching for a shirt and sleeve sponsor, which would generate the revenue needed for its payroll commitments.

Officials say the club will settle all outstanding payments by Friday night. Vasco is currently second in Brazil’s Serie A championship having won both of its opening matches.
