No doubt the professional football leagues in South America have some of the most unruly and ill-disciplined football players in the world. Even the officials for that matter, go wild occasionally and threaten to pull out a gun in the middle of a football match. Apart from the flowing football and brilliant beaches, South America is also known for its fiesty players and often reckless tackles. Players from the continent seem to abide by rules that are different from the rest of the world.
Now, Brazil have come under the spotlight when a total of 11-players were sent off during an under 20s match. Flamengo de Guarulhos played against Sertaozinho and it was all going fine until Flamengo cruised to a 2-0 lead. That was when all the trouble started and it quickly escalated into a mass brawl involving players and coaches from both sides, chasing each other across the football pitch.
Sertaozinho coach pushed the opponent's left-back Helio Vaz and it was followed by a brawl that saw punches, kicks and everything in between. The fight lasted several minutes until a police officer intervened and stopped this strange occurrence on a football pitch.
Once everything cooled down after all the chaos and mayhem, the referee pulled out 11 red cards – six to Sertaozinho and five to Guarulhos. Justice was indeed served by the official who decided to punish both players from either side. For now, we can only wish them good luck to put a team together for next week.
Once again, South American football has proved to us that it never fails to amuse us with such violent and yet entertaining incidents. Perhaps, some of these players should try their hands at karate next time. Such is their love for flying kicks.
Have a look at the mass brawl:
