Adnan Januzaj, the 18-year-old Belgian attacking midfielder who signed for Manchester United at the age of 16 from Anderlecht, made news for being Manchester United’s best performer during the pre-season friendly matches, showing off some impressive close-control dribbling skills.
Then came his Man of the Match performance against Sevilla in Rio Ferdinand‘s testimonial match, where he provided the assist for United’s only goal in the 3-1 loss.
This was enough for United fans across the globe to learn how talented the young lad is. The fans’ dream of seeing him play for the senior team in competitive matches came true when he came on for RvP in the FA Community Shield 2013 against Wigan Athletic.
The Belgian made his Premier League debut a month later when he replaced Ashley Young with 23 minutes of normal time left. With his pace, close control dribbling, and crisp passing, he managed to impress United fans.
“I can’t pronounce his name, we just call him Adnan. He is one of the most promising talents we have here.”
“Adnan is a beautifully balanced player. He’s only 18 and still to grow into his frame. But he has good balance, good acceleration and he’s a very good technical player.”
“He’s grown up a certain way and I think he has had a tremendous education over in Belgium. He’s come over here with good technique and is desperate to be a footballer as well so he’s got a lot of things going for him.”
“Adnan is still developing but there’s no doubt he’s got talent too. He’s got a good footballing brain and a good touch. We’re trying to get him stronger and fitter and he’s getting to know the Manchester United style of play as well.” – Sir Alex Ferguson
With Valencia working hard to regain his 2011-12 form and not being effective with crosses, Nani being inconsistent and seeing himself on the sidelines due to injuries and Ashley Young’s hardly-felt presence on the flanks, Januzaj just gave what the fans have been hoping to see- flair on the flanks.
The Belgian prodigy, on his Premier League debut, completed 18/20 passes he attempted (90% accuracy) and created two chances which is more than his wing counterparts – Valencia and Young. A 25-minute cameo itself was enough to prove how effective a player he can be, if given a chance.
On a lighter note, Adnan Janujaz shares his birthday with the past United’s number 7 Cristiano Ronaldo and debut with George Best, who defined the number 7 at Old Trafford.
