Chelsea’s all-conquering juggernaut was halted last night by Sunderland as they held the London club to a 0-0 draw becoming the only Premier League team this season to keep a clean sheet against them. The Black Cats were resilient enough defensively to stave off the Chelsea attack but also had enough chances to win the game but for some woeful finishing. The talking point of the game though was Diego Costa’s kick at Sunderland defender John O’Shea which was completely ignored by the referee.
The Stadium of Light saw the former Atletico Madrid forward further strengthen his reputation as a short-tempered individual. Vying for the ball in the first half, the Spaniard came out better and ended up winning a freekick but appeared to kick in the Irishman’s direction seconds later.
Referee Kevin Friend took no action on either player.
Starting the match with 4 yellow cards for the league season, the 26-year-old was a booking away from a one-match-suspension.And the booking came in the 54th minute for his elbow on another former Manchester United defender Wes Brown.
Replays indicated that it might not have been intentional. Chelsea will now be without Costa for the visit to White Hart Lane. Midfielder Cesc Fabregas is also carrying 4 yellow cards to the next game.
