UPDATE (June 18): This goal won Atletico Madrid’s Goal of the Season award
Fernando Torres scored the solitary goal as Atletico Madrid won 0-1 against Villarreal at El Madrigal stadium on Wednesday night. The Spanish international came on as a substitute to ensure the Rojoblancos would go home with all three points.
This was the 31-year-old’s fifth goal ever since he returned to his boyhood club in the January transfer window and the goal ensured Atletico would take a six-point lead over Sevilla. Atletico are now third with 75 points with four games to go while Sevilla are fourth with 69 points.
Torres came on as a substitute in the second half and scored in the 76th minute with a fantastic run and goal. He made a run from his own half while Villarreal’s Eric Bailly looked to control the ball. But the Ivory Coast defender had his back to Torres and didn’t see him run in from behind and nick the ball.
While Bailly tried to shield the ball, Torres took it off him and made a run for goal. He then rounded the goalkeeper, paused at the exact moment two defenders slid across him to block the shot and then calmly slotted home under no pressure.
