A FIFA spokesperson has said a robbery at the Spanish team hotel during the Confederations Cup was subject to “an ongoing police investigation”.
She declined to comment any further and steered media towards a statement released by the Spanish Football Federation.
The Spanish Football Federation has denied that a hotel robbery at the team hotel was linked to a party with women from outside the team’s travelling party following a 2-1 victory over Uruguay nine days ago.
It admits six players were robbed but has taken great exception to allegations which it feels “damage the honour of the players and their family and friends.”
Delia Fischer from Fifa distancing the organisation from the story:
“The Spanish football association has released yesterday a statement which you can follow, what they gave on their side. So from the FIFA side there is no more to add than this is an ongoing police investigation, but the Spanish team has sent out a clear statement.”
The media briefing was also attended by former Ghanaian footballer Anthony Baffoe, who’s in Brazil as part of an anti-racism campaign:
“That the sanction is already going to be implemented is important because you can see FIFA and UEFA are taking this very serious and that’s what I’m happy about.”
He admitted that Russia, which hosts the World Cup in five years, has had its problems:
“We had a lot of incidents and I hope Russia, which is a beautiful country, will take that opportunity when hosting the World Cup in 2018 to create more awareness about it, to do more campaigns.”
