Relegation-threatened Fluminense earned a hard fought 1-0 win over Cruzeiro in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie Aon Wednesday.
Fluminense ended their five match losing streak courtesy 1-0 home victory over Cruzeiro. The hosts should have taken the lead on the stroke of half time after the referee awarded a penalty for Mayke’s challenge on Wagner.
However striker Fred was denied from the spot by goalkeeper Fabio, not once but twice.
Following the break, it was fellow keeper Diego Cavalieri’s chance to impress when he denied Everton Ribeiro’s goalbound effort in the 69th minute.
Fred made amends for his earlier miss when he headed home in the 78th minute to seal a vital win for the home side.
The three points lift Fluminense out of the relegation zone and onto 12 points, while Cruzeiro remain on 18.
