We all love to imitate professional wrestlers, especially those in the WWE. But this young goalkeeper took things a little too far in a high school football match.
Cassie Sturtz may have watched videos of the likes of Goldberg and Edge in the WWE in training. Because there’s no way this dangerous move was taught to her by her coaches.
The incident occurred in a game between Pine Forest and Pinecrest High School in the United States. In the dying moments of the game, Pinecrest High School player Riley Barrett was released by her teammate and she beat the last defender with a run. However, the pass was too heavy and she just let it go thinking goalkeeper Cassie would control the ball as she came charging out of her box.
To her absolute shock and those watching on, Cassie completely ignored the ball, launched herself into the air and flew into Riley, knocking her down flat. Riley did not move for a few seconds as her teammates looked around in confusion, waiting for the referee to award a free-kick and possibly send the goalkeeper off.
But to their surprise, no action was taken as the linesman’s flag had gone up for an offside call! A second look at the video shows that Riley was well onside when the ball was played through the defence – a terrible decision by the linesman on the near side.
However, Cassie did not escape punishment. While the game was allowed to go on with Pinecrest High School eventually winning the match 4-1, Cassie was retrospectively handed a two-match ban for a “flagrant contact foul”.
It is also understood that while Riley had the stuffing knocked out of her following that clash, she was able to leave the pitch without requiring any further medical assistance.
