‘The sleeping giants of world football’ as termed by FIFA president Sep Blatter, are presently ranked 155 in the FIFA rankings. India finished runners-up in the recently concluded SAFF Championship after losing 0-2 to Afghanistan. Once ranked 100, India have deteriorated drastically. Forget about world football as well as Asian football. India finds it hard to compete with the South Asian countries. Indian national team technical director, Rob Baan had said that the realistic chances of India playing in the World Cup is probably not until 2026.
