Mourinho tells Arbeloa and Modric to get yellow cards against Sevilla so that they would miss the game against Rayo Vallecano and not an away game that follows it.
This isn’t the first time Mourinho has done this. 2 years back, in a Champions League group game, Mourinho had Alonso and Ramos get deliberate yellow cards so that they would miss the next inconsequential group game, and not the knockout games that followed after that. Mourinho was fined 30000 euros for this act of ‘gamesmanship’.
This practice, fair or not, ensures that players complete their suspensions earlier, instead of carrying them into the next crucial games.
