Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was driven to laughter last night, by the thought of Liverpool winning the title. When fellow pundit, and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher earnestly insisted that he believed Liverpool could win the league, Neville burst out laughing at the prospect of a first title in the Premier League era. The duo continued by agreeing that the next few games will be key for the Reds, as will the form and future of their 19 goal top scorer Luis Suarez.
Carragher opened by conceding that there are better teams in the league and that top four is still the aim, but that he believes that Liverpool are in a good position for a title challenge due to the form of Luis Suarez.
“They’re in a great position here. We’re not talking ten games into the season, we’re talking almost halfway. We’ve got two difficult away games to come, so maybe we’ll know more at the start of January. I think if you offered Brendan Rodgers the top four I think he’d take it. I think there are better teams in the league, I think Arsenal and Manchester City and maybe even Chelsea.”
“But the longer this run goes on and Suarez stays in that form [then maybe]. Players can win teams titles and he’s the stand out player in this league”
Once he had regained his composure, Neville agreed. The former Manchester United defender praised Brendan Rodgers for his work in progressing the team, but believes that their hopes are pinned on Suarez.
“I think the big thing is, one that the manager’s doing a good job”, he said. “The fact that they’re actually progressing and getting better, that’s all important. “
“[But] reading reports in the last week that if they don’t finish in the top four then Suarez has a release clause would worry me as a Liverpool fan, because that would really set them back.”
“If you’re a Liverpool fan then you really need to finish in the Champions League this season. Keep your best player, add to it and have the glory of the Champions League. So for me it’s a massive 6 months for Liverpool in respect to that progression and for Brendan Rodgers to continue upwards. Losing Suarez would be a disaster when you can see they’re going in the right direction.
Neville continued by sounding a note of caution, stressing the difficulty of the Christmas period to the Anfield side.
“It’s huge”, he said. “Playing City and then Chelsea away. That will tell us a lot more about them as they’re the two toughest away games you could play at the moment. I think that the fact that they aren’t in Europe is working for them. It means they’re fresh, Brendan Rodgers is a tactical coach so can work on his team week in week out.”
“I always use the word power when you think of teams that win the championship and this season you look at Toure, Negredo and Kompany. I look at a couple of the performances that City put in against United and Tottenham and I think they’re the only team that has that power.
“I think that the team Mourinho put out tonight has more of it than when they have the 4231, but I think that’s where Liverpool will suffer. When Suarez goes three or four games without a goal, and that will happen, will they be able to drive through in these moments? That’s where the Toure’s of this world stand alone.”
