Under Alex Ferguson, Manchester United proliferated the notion of a ‘counter-attack’. However, that entire concept took a slight hit, under the David Moyes tenure, who attempted a direct style of play. Under Louis Van Gaal, counter-attacks have returned to the United setup, helping them make up for their haphazard defending. The return of Michael Carrick has acted as a catalyst to these counter-attacks.
The pace of Angel Di Maria, vision of Carrick, willingness of Wayne Rooney and intuition of Juan Mata all add to a successful Manchester United counter attack. The likes of Robin Van Persie and Falcao add the finishing touches to a swift attack, which seems to be getting better every day.
