Manuel Pellegrini made a heinous gaffe after leading Manchester City to League Cup glory as he forgot which Manchester-based club he was in charge of.
Manchester City defeated Sunderland 3-1 to take the first major trophy of the season at Wembley, with goals coming from Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas to cancel out Fabio Borini’s early effort.
But in the aftermath of securing his first trophy in Europe in the quest for an unprecedented quadruple, Pellegrini slipped up in his post-match interview, crediting the wrong club for the success.
The Chilean manager told reporters, “I love pressure. To manage a team as big as Manchester United and to have lots of competitions is very good.”
Pellegrini could be forgiven for his mistake given the occasion and the language barrier, but it will come as no consolation to City that their first trophy of the season has been overshadowed by their own manager thinking he is in charge of their fiercest rivals.
One thing they may consider however, is that it is probably the closest Manchester United will get to winning a trophy this season!
