Henrikh Mkhitaryan, a 27.5 million euro off-season signing from Shakhtar Donetsk, opened his Bundesliga account for Dortmund in the 10th minute.
Jakub Blaszczykowski timed his pass perfectly to set up the Armenian.
And it was another off-season signing, Frankfurt’s Czech striker Vaclav Kadlec, who equalised in the 36th.
Mkhitaryan produced a fine individual effort for what proved to be the winner in the 56th minute.
