Video: Peruvian footballer survives even after getting hit by direct lightning strike

Initial reports, including the player’s Twitter account, reported Contreras had been killed

Peruvian footballer Joao Contreras was struck by lightning during a football match in his homeland but miraculously survived the impact, according to media reports.

The 21-year-old player plays for Sport Aguila. His team was playing Union Fuerza Minera in the Copa Peru.

The game was hit by a storm, and Contreras was struck directly by lightning.

The Guardian also said that an assistant referee was also struck, and the match was suspended with the score 1-1. Several fans and the referee were treated for shock but are reported to be fine.
