This is perhaps the most non-violent way to receive a booking in football as Bristol Rovers’ Lee Mansell was issued a yellow card for kissing Gateshead’s JJ O’Donnell in his lips during a Conference match.
During Bristol Rovers’ 3-2 win over Gateshead last Friday, English midfielder Mansell found himself in a heated argument with opponent O’Donnel. What followed next was something that no one had seen coming as Mansell left a quick kiss on O’Donnell’s lips in order to ‘diffuse’ the situation.
Neither O’Donnel nor the referee shared the same sense of humour as Mansell did, and he was eventually given a yellow following the incident.
Later speaking to BBC Radio, the midfielder said, "It's the first time I've been booked for kissing someone. I did it to diffuse the situation. We either clash heads and he goes down or I end up doing something silly.”
“It is only when I got in the car to go home and saw Twitter had lit up and my missus said: 'What the hell were you thinking? We had a laugh and a joke about it with the lads afterwards. It's another thing to add to the list of daft things I've done on the football pitch,” he added.
