Real Madrid's president Florentino Perez was seen – in a recording – mocking Barcelona's UEFA Champions League titles following his team's eleventh victory at the San Siro on Saturday night.
Zinedine Zidane's men beat Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties sealing their second UEFA Champions League final win over their cross-city rivals in the span of three years. This victory further etches Real Madrid's name in UEFA Champions League folklore with AC Milan having won the second highest – four behind the Los Blancos.
Luis Enrique's Barcelona crashed out of the competition after losing to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals but still went on to win the Liga BBVA and the Copa del Rey. Having won the Champions League last year, Barcelona now have won the coveted competition five times in their history and Florentino Perez pointed that out to a fan when he asked about the President's thoughts on Barcelona.
You have to recognise that [Real] is the better club," he jokes.
"[Barcelona] has five [European Cups], we have 11!"
The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona continues to evolve every year with the two of them beating each other once this season. While Barcelona thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu, Zidane's men returned the favour by beating the Blaugrana at 2-1 at the Camp Nou.
Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar were widely expected to guide Barcelona to another Champions League victory this year and possibly the first team to ever defend the title but they were undone by a resilient Atletico Madrid who put up quite the fight against Real Madrid in the final, too.
Real Madrid won the final thanks to a Sergio Ramos opener in the first half which was later undone by Yannick Ferrera Carrasco equaliser – but they put away all their five penalties perfectly to give Zidane the rare honour of winning the title as a player, assistant manager and manager.
