Former Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita who rose to fame for his acrobatic style of goalkeeping symbolised by his trademark ‘Scorpion Kick’ has recreated the historic moment over a swimming pool to mark 20 years since the move made its first major appearance against England at Wembley.

Higuita became known for his adventurous style of goalkeeping, often rushing out to compete for the ball and clear it. He would even risk dribbling out with the ball at times, such was the madness of the Colombian. He was the sweeper keeper before it was cool to be one. Nicknamed ‘El Loco’, the custodian would even step up to take set pieces for the national team.

In 1995, when England welcomed Colombia to Wembley, the world would marvel at what Higuita had to offer, he performed his Scorpion Kick in front of the thousands of people in the stadium and even more watching on television. Jamie Redknapp floated in a cross that was overhit and floated towards ‘the Madman’ and instead of catching it as many would, Higuita leapt forward bringing up his feet behind him and arching up to kick the ball away in a move that would send shockwaves through the footballing world.

20 years on from that day, the shot-stopper recreated the moment and uploaded the video onto his Twitter account for the world to see. His repetition of the skill performed 20 years later is almost as good as the one he originally achieved in England, albeit under different circumstances. There is some residual madness still persisting in the now 49-year-old.

Had it happened in this day and age, it would probably ‘break the internet’ as Manuel Neuer does with Bayern Munich and Germany.
