An in-team rivalry came to the fore last night as two Netherlands forwards openly disagreed on the pitch in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Kazakhstan. The away side had taken a shock lead and the Dutch looked lost. With frustration all around and passions running high, captain Robin van Persie got a chance to equalise with the ball falling on his favoured left foot he hit it wide of the keeper.
However, team-mate Jan Klaas Huntelaar was seen moments laters showing his frustration at his captain gesturing that he should have looked for options.
The Mnachester United forward retaliated by a gesture if his own that seemed to be asking Huntelaar to shut up.
Here is another angle of the incident:
Netherlands eventually came back to win 3-1 with goals from Huntelaar, Affelaay and Van Persie.
The Dutch captain later described the Schalke forward’s reaction as “exaggerated”.
"I thought it was a bit of an exaggerated reaction,"
"I think I had the right to shoot at goal from that angle," he said. "It's no big thing. Something goes with it. Though I can do though."
