Back in 2003, Roy Keane had already been captain of Manchester United for 6 years and was being touted by Sir Alex Ferguson to take over the coach’s job when he would eventually retire. Danny Welbeck was a starry-eyed 12 year old whose talent was being honed at the club’s youth academy.
Keane, a strong midfielder known for wanting to dominate proceedings, was club captain for 8 years not without reason – he can motivate like few others. His responsibilities were not confined to the senior team, as this video shows.
Keane talks Welbeck through a session instructing him on the skills most integral to a midfielder’s inventory, and then enjoys a game with the academy lads. Saying talent is not enough, Keane leaves with two golden pieces of advice for youngsters learning the game.
