Anderlecht plays in the Belgian Pro League and is the most successful Belgian football team in European competitions, with five trophies, as well as in the Belgian Pro League, with 33 championship wins. They have also won nine Belgian Cups and hold the record for most consecutive Belgian championship titles, winning five between the 1963-64 and 1967-68 seasons, but, RSC Anderlecht’s players must be cursing their luck as they played a 1-1 draw with fellow Belgian league team Mechelen on the tenth match day.
This particular match will never bring back happy memories for the supporters and the players. In an unfortunate turn of events, Anderlecht failed to score from all the three penalties awarded to them throughout the match. Two of the three penalties were awarded in the first fifteen minutes of the game. The third penalty was awarded late on when Anderlecht were leading 1-0, the result being the same. To add to their woes, one of their players scored an own goal in the dying stages of the match to finish off a horrific day for the club.
The home team started the game eagerly and were awarded a penalty when Ezekiel was fouled after five minutes. Praet took the penalty, but hit Mechelen goalkeeper Gillet. After fifteen minutes, Anderlecht were awarded another penalty. This time, Okaka took his responsibility, but Gillet chose the right corner once again.
At the beginning of the second half, the home team attacked immediately. This almost resulted in a goal, but Okaka’s shot, on a centre by Ezekiel, went across the goal. After ten minutes, the opening goal finally went in. Stefano Okaka put in the first one from up close.
Later on, the Purple & White were awarded a third penalty. Substitute Tielemans tried to convert it, but Gillet was in the way again. During injury time, the unthinkable happened. Kara scored an own goal, as a result of which the Belgian giants lost two important points.
