On May 7, 2006, the Real Madrid supporters had put up a banner at the stadium which read "Thank you for the magic". These words were dedicated to a special someone who was playing his last match in the legendary white jersey of the Los Blancos.
The name was none other than that of Zinedine Zidane who had announced that he would be retiring at the end of the match against Villareal. It was an emotional day for everyone associated with Real Madrid and especially for Zidane's family who had gathered at the stadium to watch the midfielder play one last time for the club he had joined in 2001. Zidane’s entire family had come to see him in action and his Enzo was in tears on that day watching his dad play for the last time.
The match ended 3-3 and the Frenchman who scored that day remembers what it felt like and how he had fought back tears that day. “When I looked at the stands, I saw my friends and family there. They were there to support me and that made the match even more special for me. I remember that I battled to hold back tears," he had said in an interview with Fifa.com.
The fans in the whole stadium held up placards with Zidane’s jersey number on it. It was incredible scenes at the Santiago Bernabeu as fans gave a fitting farewell to one of their greatest legends. It is one of those days that no Madrid fan or any Zidane fan can forget.
