#9 Patrik Berger, Old Trafford, 04 March 2000
Patrick Berger spent 7 seasons on Merseyside and moved to the club in 1996 from Borussia Dortmund. The central midfielder, a lifelong Liverpool fan, scored 35 goals for the club and played a part in Liverpool’s Cup treble of 2000-01.
One of Berger’s most memorable goals of the 35 he scored was the bullet-like shot that he hit against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Liverpool were playing the to-be-champions and Berger opened the scoring in the 28th minute.
The midfielder hit the ball with venom from a set-piece which went around the United wall and United’s then Dutch goalkeeper, Raimond van der Gouw, tried to push it away, but in vain. The game ended 1-1 with Ole Gunnar Solkjaer scoring a goal just before half-time.
Liverpool didn’t win any trophy that season, but Berger had a good season, scoring 9 goals in all competitions.
