Uzbekistan failed to clinch an automatic qualification spot for next years World Cup despite a 5-1 demolition of Qatar on Tuesday.

Qatar took a shock lead in the first half, but Uzbekistan were far superior after the break and Bakhodir Nasimov tapped in an equalliser to make it 1-1.

Three more followed for Uzbekistan and they wrapped things up when Ulugbek Bakaev thrashed the ball home, following a mistake from the keeper.

Having missed out on automatic qualification via goal difference, Uzbekistan will go into a sudden-death playoff against Jordan, who beat Oman 1-0.

Oman entered the match two points clear of Jordan in third place in the group and needed only a draw to enter the playoffs for a ticket to Brazil.

But the breakthrough came for Jordan in the 57th minute as Khalil Zaid’s cross found Ahmad Hayel, who headed it home to give the hosts a 1-0 victory.

Jordan face Uzbekistan in a two-legged continental playoff in September. And the winner of that clash will then plays a two-legged inter-continental playoff against fifth-placed nation in South America qualification – to decide who boards that plane to Brazil.
