The UEFA Champions League final and Game of Thrones are two of the most popular television events of the year. Naturally, some have seen fit to put the two together, with hilariously incredible results. JOE.co.uk have become famous for their videos featuring pop culture references and footballing events in the news, and it doesn’t get bigger than the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Caution: Game of Thrones spoilers follow!
The video features the traumatic final scene of the latest Game of Thrones episode. The origin of beloved one-worded gentle giant ‘Hodor’s name is tragically revealed to be an amalgamation of the words ‘Hold the door’ as Hodor, warged into by Bran Stark, ‘sacrifices’ his life holding the door so that the disabled Stark and Meera Reed can escape the clutches of the Night’s King.
However, this video hilariously flips the script, casting Diego Simeone as the Night’s King and Atletico Madrid’s defensive hordes as the Others and their Wight army. They have chased down the cave where Gareth Bale, cast as Bran Stark is dreaming with Zinedine Zidane, cast as the Three-Eyed Crow. Benzema and Modric, dash off to rescue Bale with Ronaldo awakening as Hodor.
The twist here is that Bale has Ronaldo chanting the words ‘Ballon d’Or’ instead of ‘Hold the door’.
It’s rather apt as Ronaldo has repeatedly bailed Real Madrid out in the Champions League this season, with the most memorable performance being his stunning hat-trick against Wolfsburg in the 2nd leg to reverse a 2-0 deficit.
Perhaps the Portuguese superstar will be Real Madrid’s saviour yet again as Los Blancos take on Diego Simeone’s Rojiblancos in the UEFA Champions League semifinal. However, Madrid boast superstars such as Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema who can also have an effect on the finals as well.
