Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi began his career with Al Sadd with a bang, scoring a brilliant free kick goal on debut for his new club. The 35-year-old’s goal was not enough however as his side lost in the pre-season friendly match held in Vienna against Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
Xavi, who spent 16 seasons with the Barcelona senior team making over 500 appearances for the Catalans, left the club at the end of the 2014/15 season after helping them win the dream treble of La Liga, Champions League and the Copa del Rey. With his contract with the Spanish running out, Xavi had signed a three-year deal with Al Sadd that is reportedly worth around $11.7 million per season.
The former Spanish international was playing his first match for Al Sadd and wearing the captain's armband led from the front by bending the ball over the wall and past the fully outstretched Al Nassr goalkeeper. The goal scored in the 57th minute cancelled out Muhammad Al Sahlawi’s strike which had given the Saudi Arabian club the lead in the 30th minute.
Just when it seemed like the match would be heading for a draw, Jamaan Al Dosari scored in the 87th minute to win the match for Al-Nassr 2-1.
