Nemanja Vidic believes Manchester United can win the Champions League

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has insisted that the side can do “something special” in this season’s Champions League, despite their poor league form. The Serb, <who is leaving the club at the end of the season, believes that the side are improving and refused to concede defeat in their quest for the Premier League’s fourth Champions League place, telling reporters that they have a chance to both finish fourth and secure European glory.

United face Olympiakos in the last 16 of the Champions League, travelling to Greece on Tuesday for the first leg, and go into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

“I believe we can do something special in the Champions League. I really do,” insisted Vidic.

“I believe that if we keep playing as we did – solid – and improve our form again we have a chance to do something good for the rest of the season. That means fourth place and the Champions League.”

If United are to achieve fourth place, then their form must improve soon. Prior to victory in South London United had gone three league games without a win, but Vidic drew confidence from their win over Palace.

“We always believe we can do well, but we know we have to improve in every game and I think we saw some signs.”

“To win it you have to defend well as a team. This is the way you should play and that is encouraging for us before we go to Greece.”

No other United centre back has won more headed duels or made more clearances per 90 minutes played than Vidic.
