Former Mahindra United and Pune FC assistant coach Vivek Nagul has rejected the offer to be Mohun Bagan’s head coach, according to a report of the DNA.
Nagul holds an UEFA B and AFC A license and is currently the assistant coach of Tanzanian football club Azam FC.
Since Mohun Bagan’s technical director Subhash Bhowmick doesn’t have a coaching license, the Mariners approached Nagul but the Pune-based coach believes he is still not ready for the I-League job and wants to complete his contract with Azam, which runs till 2015.
“They had approached me but I am of the opinion that it is a huge responsibility, and I need some more exposure in this field. I still have two more years and I want to complete this.
“There could be many changes in the I-league in the season ahead, and some more time with the Tanzania team will do a world of good for me. Subhash Bhowmick and I did have a talk about the new assignment, but I feel that I am not prepared well for the job and I have not told them (Bhowmick) about the move which I will convey soon,” Nagul was quoted saying.
With Nagul backing out, Mohun Bagan will have to look at other options for the head coach role while they also await a certificate of competence for Bhowmick from the AFC.
The green-and-maroon brigade are determined to end their four-season trophy drought and have signed 12 new players this season. Pre-season training has also started with 25 players and Japanese Katsumi Yusa is the only foreigner in the squad so far.
Newly-appointed physical trainer Djair Miranda Garcia from Brazil has already started working with the players and Bhowmick is eyeing IFA Shield success next month to end the long wait for silverware.
