Tottenham Hotspurs have agreed a deal to sign Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches for a transfer fee of around £8.5m.
The sale of the former Benfica player will be the most expensive in the history of Steaua Bucharest. However, the team hopes that the defender will play in the second leg of their Champions League clash against Legia Warsaw on Thursday.
“The two clubs have agreed to transfer him. I’m very happy for him,” Steaua manager Laurentiu Reghecampf told a press conference on Saturday.
Tottenham has been searching for central defender after the departures of Steven Caulker and William Gallas. According to experts, Chiriches plays a game similar to that of current Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen and the pairing is something that is worth waiting for.
Chiriches, 23 has won 19 caps for Romania and has played at four different Romanian clubs. He also had a one year spell at Benfica in 2007.
