Manchester United star Wayne Rooney will be made the captain of the club in the summer if he agrees to sign a new deal.
Reports suggest that the England striker wants to extend his stay at the club, which could see him retire at the club. Preliminary talks have begun between Paul Stretford, his agent and the club officials for a proposed four-year deal, which would see him take over the captain’s armband from the departing duo of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.
The new four-and-a-half year deal will be worth £300,000-a-week, and the captain’s armband will be provided as an added incentive. United’s top brass had made Rooney aware in advance of the record-breaking move for Juan Mata. The 28-year old has also been informed about the transfer plans of David Moyes for this window and the next.
With Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand all set to leave the club at the end of the season, following the end of their contract, Rooney will be one of the seniors in the squad, whom Moyes has identified as the man to lead the club into a new era of success.
Old Trafford officials hope that the £37.1 million transfer of Juan Mata from Chelsea will be able to convince Rooney to commit his future to the club. This contract is set to be the last mega-money deal that the United forward will get n his stellar career.
The forward had previously threatened to quit in October 2010, after refusing to sign a new deal, citing the club’s perceived lack of ambition at the time.
Although at the time he was persuaded to sign a new deal, the club hopes that by keeping Rooney in the know how of the transfer strategy and targets from now on, they will be hope to transform the situation. They would like to ensure that by doing this, Rooney sees himself as a cornerstone of the new era of Manchester United.
David Moyes on the other hand has remained coy on United’s ability to make further signing in this window, which closes on Friday at 11pm.
“I don’t think we’ll have any more in January,” said the Scot. “I’m still working on it and looking to do things.
“We know exactly what we’d like to do and if it changes in the last week, which sometimes it can do, then we’ll try. I hope it will be the first of some new signings that will arrive, but more likely in the summer.”
