FC Bayern Munich centre-back, Mats Hummels feels England international and Manchester United forward, Wayne Rooney is being unnecessarily scrutinised and deserves better treatment.
The Red Devils captain has been hugely unimpressive in the limited amount of chances he has gotten under Jose Mourinho this season. Such has been his form, that the 31-year-old has been dropped from the Manchester United starting XI for the first time in his career at Old Trafford.
To make matter worse, Rooney was all over the headlines last month after he was pictured drinking at a wedding while he was on international duty. But Mats Hummels came out in defence of the English international having examined his situation from Germany.

The German international told the Daily Mail, “I don’t like the scrutiny he has been getting, I’m very aware of it.”
Hummels said that although he plays in Germany, he always keeps close tabs on what is happening in England. The 27-year-old defender stressed the fact that Rooney had been a top player for his club and country for more than 12 years now and that not everyone can be in the best form for their entire career.
“I play in Germany, but I am very interested in what is happening in England. How many years has he played for Manchester United now? Twelve years? How many years has he been a top player for the English national team? Ten years? Maybe more? You can’t play at your best all the time.”
Hummels also revealed that he came very close to playing alongside Wayne Rooney for Manchester United as former Red Devils manager, Louis Van Gaal was keen on bringing the German defender to Old Trafford.
“’Yes,’ he said, when asked how close a deal was. ‘Yes, very close. There were talks, several times in the last few years. I had offers from England or one of the three big Spanish clubs. But nothing got close like from England. Van Gaal wanted me, but he wasn’t the only one.”
After nine seasons with Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels moved to arch rivals Bayern Munich for £30million in the summer. The German defender’s transfer to Bayern Munich was a difficult decision for him but he took it anyway after reassurances from many advisors including Jurgen Klopp.
Mats Hummels' team, Bayern Munich will take on Atletico Madrid in the final Champions League group game on Wednesday.
