Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney believes that Ryan Giggs‘ achievements for the club over the years meant that he deserves a statue outside their stadium, Old Trafford. Giggs celebrated his 38th birthday yesterday, which also marked his 21 years association with the club.
Last month, Sir Alex Ferguson was given a great 25 years anniversary gift, as the North East stand in Old Trafford was renamed as the Sir Alex Ferguson stand. Now, Rooney believes that Giggs deserves a statue outside of Old Trafford, for everything that he has achieved with the club over the past 20 years or so.
“If there’s one player over the last 20 to 25 years who deserves a statue outside Old Trafford, it’s Ryan Giggs,” Rooney said. “Because what Giggsy has done here is absolutely incredible. “He made his debut as a 17 year old and so to still be playing at the top level 21 years later is a magnificent achievement.
Giggs has been an influential figure within the United set-up but has seen lesser playing minutes in recent times. With many tipping this season to be his last, Rooney believes that Giggs’ will forever be remembered as a special icon of the club.
“He has been fantastic for this football club and to still be performing so well at his age is phenomenal. Giggsy’s a wonderful example around the club too, the way he trains, the way he prepares and to see him working so hard on his game every day explains why he is so special.”
