Wayne Rooney, Mesut Ozil swap more realistic for Manchester United and Real Madrid

Manchester United v Chelsea - Premier League

Wayne Rooney

Manchester united boss David Moyes has some issues he needs to address when he officially starts on Monday. The first and most important issue to deal with is the future of Wayne Rooney. They are due to meet this week to see if things can progress cordially.

A swap move involving Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo has been mooted but this deal wouldn’t work. Rooney will never live up to the standards of Ronaldo at Real and Ronaldo would’ve gone back to United if Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge. Ronaldo has set an extremely high bar for anyone going to Real Madrid. He has scored 146 goals in 135 games, and so any forward going to Real Madrid will look like a failure in comparison. Rooney will never get anywhere near that amount of goals but he also is a completely different type of player to Ronaldo and that’s why they formed such a good working relationship at United.

Rooney is a quintessential number 10 player who cuts inside from wide to devastating effect. He would compliment Cavani upfront by providing him with many opportunities in front of goal and keep the pressure off him by scoring a few himself. Ronaldo is a natural winger who floats across the midfield, dribbling at players at high speed which leaves them in a tangled mess on the floor.

Realistically, Real Madrid aren’t going to let Ronaldo leave though, so if it comes to a point where Wayne Rooney wants to force his way out and Real are the only suitors then they should try to swap him for Mesut Ozil and give the German that chance to be the star man at Old Trafford.

If a swap deal for Mesut Ozil can materialise then Manchester United would have an equally formidable forward line. Ozil, Van Persie and some combination of Hernandez, Kagawa, Welbeck, Valencia and Young is an incredible forward line and would keep the red half of Manchester on track for another title.

Ozil would suit the way United play and would certainly be capable of coping in the fast-paced Premier League, having thrived in the equally frenetic Bundesliga. Not only can he play out wide but he can be used as either a second forward or his best role of free roaming playmaker.

If Real Madrid and Man United swapped Rooney and Ozil the deal would work in the favour of both clubs. Both players showed signs of staleness last season having lost their place in their respective pecking orders. Rooney would give Madrid drive and will to win, and Ozil would give United wispy invention and creativity. It works for both parties.
