Wayne Rooney can become a Manchester United legend

Wayne Rooney and Manchester United are just meant to be. This is what the commentator for United’s fateful Champions League match against Fenerbahce said when he saw the youngster dazzle everybody with his performance. Rooney, who then wore the number 8, scored a brilliant hat-trick against his team’s Turkish opponents and instantly won the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful along with convincing Sir Alex Ferguson that he made the right decision when he splashed out £25.6m for the Scouser.

However, there have been some shaky moment’s in Rooney’s career, most notably in 2010 and 2013 where he almost quit the club due to differences with Sir Alex Ferguson. All that seems to be in the past now as various tabloids have stated that Rooney is set to open contract talks with Manchester United and see out his career with his first mentor David Moyes.

The recent arrival of Juan Mata might be a factor in Rooney’s decision as he realized that David Moyes is serious about rebuilding the club with world class players. Newspapers also report that the forward is set to get paid £300,000 per week which will make him Manchester United’s highest paid player ahead of Robin Van Persie. The 28-year-old fully deserves to get the pay hike as he has been an integral part of the Red Devils this season and has even been their saviour on numerous occasions. The England international has also backed David Moyes to succeed at Old Trafford and said that the players are to blame for the bad results. This statement shows how much Rooney has matured as a player and a person over the past few years.

Rooney owes something to the Manchester United fans too. He has been loved at Manchester United ever since he made his unforgettable debut and is held in the highest regard by the supporters. The fans have shown some unwavering support to their beloved striker even when it was made public that he had an affair in 2010. Rooney’s form was severely affected by this expose and only managed 16 goals that season. It was the fans’ affection that got Rooney back to his best form in the 2011-2012 season where he scored a remarkable 34 goals including the memorable bicycle kick against Manchester City.

The supporters’ love may also be a reason for wanting to stay at Manchester United. Very few clubs show so much affection to their players the way United do. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s name is still chanted by fans even though he is at Real Madrid. When Rooney submitted a transfer request last season, everyone expected the fans to revolt against him but they stood by their player which amazed everyone, including Rooney himself who stated that the fans were incredible. The fans treat Rooney as a god and every god likes to receive worship.

The arrival of Juan Mata is a sign of a new beginning at Old Trafford. And if David Moyes is to believed, Mata is just the beginning of things to come. Rooney will certainly want to be a part of things now. United may not win anything this season but will now surely put up a fight. Mata could be the player who will help make United the fearsome club they once were all over again.

Rooney will certainly have a big role to play in the transformation. The prolific number 10 can even be a club legend and one day may even have a statue dedicated to him alongside George Best, Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton and legendary managers Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson. In time, Rooney could even break Charlton’s seemingly untouchable 249 goal record.
