Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that the squad held a crisis meeting before the second of the Olympiakos Champions League victory.

United have been in dire straights this season and just edged through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-0 win over their Greek opponents. Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick in what was seen as the match to salvage their season.

David Moyes has struggled in his first season and the club won’t qualify for next season’s Champions League via Premier League position and were knocked out of both domestic cups earlier in 2014.

After the defeat to Liverpool, Moyes was under intense pressure but pulled out a big victory against Olympiakos and Rooney revealed how the squad came together to work out their demons.

“I’m not going to confirm the details of what happened, but obviously we talk,” said Rooney. “We talk after every game, whether we win, lose or draw, but we knew as a team what went wrong on Sunday.

“We didn’t need anyone to tell us and we came out and delivered a big performance against Olympiakos.

“I think Sunday, as all the players will admit, was a devastating result for us. To lose 3-0 the way we did was hard to take and we had to stand up and really be at our best against Olympiakos, because that wasn’t good enough.

“We’ve done that, but we have to kick on now and we have to give performances like that every week.”
