Wayne Rooney has committed his long term future to Manchester United after signing one of the most lucrative deals in Premier League history, according to The Sun.
The paper reports that Rooney has put pen to paper on a contract which will see him earn £300,000-a-week in a four-and-a-half year deal worth £70 million. The new contract is set to keep the striker at Old Trafford until 2018 when Rooney will have turned 32.
Talks had been going around all summer that the England striker was looking for a move to Chelsea in the summer. Rooney has 18 months remaining on his current deal worth £250,000-a-week, and his future at the club appears to have been secured with this new deal although the club’s official sources have not made a comment in the affirmative about the reported new deal.
The Sun has also claimed that with centre back Nemanja Vidic announcing his decision to leave the club, David Moyes will offer the armband to Rooney in an attempt to make him feel wanted and of importance at the club.
Rooney has been one of United’s very few bright spots in what has been a rather disappointing season for the Premier League champions and the signing of a new deal, if true, should be a big boost for a club which has been playing way below their capabilities this season.
