What Chelsea needs from this January transfer window

The transfer of Demba Ba saw a nice change in transfer policy of the club. Instead of signing marquee players just before the end of the transfer window, they have signed a very proven premier league player, and that too for a very nominal fee. So, what does the January transfer window hold for Chelsea? So, unless guys like Ashley Cole decide to leave in this window, there are 3 possible areas Chelsea needs to strengthen.

Centre Back

With David Luiz moving to midfield and John Terry injured, Chelsea only have Cahill and Ivanovic as options. And if we now consider Luiz permanently in a midfield role, The centre back position needs some reinforcements. Although, Chelsea have loanees like Kalas , Bruma and Chalboah, recalling them can probably harm their development. Chelsea also does not need to spend big on players like Ramos, Mats Hummels as their first choice centre backs are quite good. So they should try some proven premier league players who are available at cutprice rates like Shawcross, who can form a good partnership with Cahill. But he has recently signed a new deal with Stoke, so this can be a problem. Other options are Ajax youngster Alderwiereld and Brazilian Dede.

Central Midfield

In attacking midfield, Chelsea have a wealth of talent, so there is no need for any addition. But in the defensive part, there is is a need for improvment, considering the injury to Oriol Romeu. With Mikel going to AFCON and Lampard’s imminent departure in the summer, Chelsea have really lacking a midfeld pivot since the departure of Ballack. The presence of such a player will allow others like Luiz, Lampard to concentrate on their passing game. But the club would have to spend a lot of money for getting such a quality player. Although players like Tiote, Paulinho, McCarthy would be fine, but a stand out signing would be Marouane Fellaini, who is an excellent box to box player.

Striker

After the signing of Demba Ba, the need for another striker is less urgent. So there is no need to spend big on players like Falcao and Cavani. There are cheaper options in the market who can assist Ba and Nando in the striking department. Chelsea should try to sign strikers on cutprice deals for proven players like Theo Walcott and Llorente, who have not signed a new deal with their clubs. There is also the option of recalling Romelu Lukaku, who is scoring goals for fun with West Brom. He would fit perfectly to solve the striking puzzle. But this could hamper his development as he would not be getting regular premier league minutes. So, considering he would return in the summer, a loan deal for a player like David Villa can be a good option, considering he is a proven goal scorer

Other Positions

Other possible signings can be in the position of Left Back, if Ashley Cole is leaving in the winter window. There is talk of Southampton prodigy Luke Shaw, Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao and Spurs Full Back Benoit Assou-Ekotto coming. Also, there is talk of Brazilian Taison, but I really don’t know which position he would fit at the club.
