It is now official. Samuel Eto’o is a Chelsea player. The striker had been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea after the attempts to get Wayne Rooney from Manchester United failed. He comes from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala on a free transfer, but he is going to be one of the high-earning players in this Chelsea squad at a reported £7 million per year.
He has signed only a one-year contract and is definitely looking like a short term fix for the club.
“I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible.
“It wasn’t a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.” – Eto’o.
He has also not ruled out the possibility of extending his contract should he be at hit at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s something to talk about later, both sides need to be happy but importantly the club needs to be happy with me before they even ask my opinion on that [extending his contract].” – Eto’o.
A prolific striker, Eto’o needs no introduction. He has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world like Barcelona and Inter Milan. He played for Barcelona as a main striker, while he was used as a winger at Inter Milan by none other than José Mourinho himself.
It is difficult to predict where he will play at Chelsea, but given the sizeable midfielders we have at our disposal, it is likely to be as a striker. One thing is for sure, he will work tirelessly up front and he has the quality to put away even the half chances. He will not be involved in the UEFA Super Cup 2013 match against Bayern Munich, as he has not been included in the squad.
The Cameroon international has also won the African Player of the Year award four times, and he is probably one of the best ever African players alongside our legend Didier Drogba.
Welcome, Eto’o. Hoping for the best. Up the blues. KTBFFH.
