Liverpool managed to record a 1-0 win over Scottish opponents Hearts in the Europa League, so here are a couple of positives Liverpool can take from the match.
Jack Robinson can DeputiseRobinson showed yesterday night that he can deputise for Liverpool first choice leftback Jose Enrique with a decent performance against Hearts. Not particularly spectacular, but very solid until he was replaced by Stewart Downing at leftback.
As I said, he didn’t venture forward too much, but he provided good defensive cover from the back.
Henderson and Adam both have a part to playIn spite of all the transfer rumours, Liverpool need more depth if they are to survive multiple cup runs in the Europa League, FA Cup and the League Cup alongside the league and Henderson and Adam showed they they can still be decisive factors for the team. Henderson teed up Borini with a few excellent chances, whilst Adam’s ability to strike with power from outside the box can always be a gamechanger.
They still have their parts to play.
Sterling deserves more game timeSterling gave McGowan an absolutely torrid task of marking him, and it is no surprise that the breakthrough was resultant of work he did on his flank. Created a fabulous chance which was squandered by Italian striker Fabio Borini, and he played very well.
With that in mind, I think that he is a far better choice than Stewart Downing. He offers far more penetration and magic. It must still be remembered that he is young, and Rodgers must just ease him into the team. Giving him his first competitive start should have done him a world of good.
The first goal is vitalMuch has been said about Liverpool’s inability to keep their composure once going a goal down (I.e. West Brom defeat). Well, this game showed they were able to retain a one goal lead, and it showed that Liverpool knew how to set-up once they scored the first goal.
Confidence issues weren’t there, and Liverpool controlled the match, in the second half in particular, very well.
